You can use MagicBands to do everything from unlocking your Disney resort hotel room to collecting the PhotoPass pictures you take in the park. Since MagicBands are capable of doing so much during your trip, they may seem more overwhelming than convenient if you haven’t used them before. Rest assured though, we’re breaking down all of the uses you’ll come across for your MagicBand so you can learn everything you need to know before your trip.
Customize your MagicBands on mydisneyexperience.com
When you book a stay at a Disney resort you will receive a complimentary MagicBand for each member of your party. Upon completing your reservation (and setting up your My Disney Experience account if you haven’t already done so) you can customize the colors of your MagicBands an have them shipped to you before your trip. If you do not customize them, or if your trip is too last minute for them to be sent via snail mail you will be given grey MagicBands upon your arrival. Likewise, you can also decline orders of MagicBands if you already have one you want to use at home.
Getting your MagicBand in advance is by no means necessary, but it can make navigating the first day of your trip a bit easier. The Band would store your Magical Express reservation, so if you are taking advantage of this complimentary service while flying into Orlando International Airport you can check in for your bus with it. Additionally, if you’ve checked in online and your room is available when you arrive at your resort, you’ll receive a text message with your room number. And if your room is ready you can even skip the front desk altogether and go right to your room!
Ditch the tickets and room keys
MagicBands effectively store your park tickets, FastPasses, and room keys (which means you can charge purchases to your room with them as well!) While we recommend still carrying a wallet for your identification and backup forms of payment for the few instances where MagicBands may not be accepted, you can certainly lighten up on what you carry in the parks by using your band.
To use your MagicBand for park tickets and FastPasses, check that it is linked to your My Disney Experience account. If you received Bands as part of your room reservation they are likely already linked, however Bands purchased on your own may need to be linked manually. You’ll be able to see which Bands are linked or add new bands right on the app. From there you can make FastPasses, check park hours, and event view and download PhotoPass pictures.
Store and download your PhotoPass images
Since MagicBands work as your park tickets, cast members can scan your Bands to add PhotoPass photos you take throughout the parks. If you purchase Memory Maker (an all-inclusive photography package) you’ll be able to download all of these photos right from the app. MagicBands even work better for gathering PhotoPass images than standard park tickets would because there are select attractions where photos are *magically* added to your account when you ride with your Band on!
Use your MagicBands as payment throughout your trip
We recommend saving up extra spending money for your trip on Disney gift cards. Doing this allows you to put money aside for your trip without being able to spend it (unless you allow yourself to splurge online or at the Disney store). You can even find deals on Disney gift cards at stores like Target which may allow you to save small percentages off the cost of the cards. What does this have to do with MagicBands you ask?
Instead of using the gift cards to pay for purchases throughout your trip, charge to your room using your MagicBand and use the gift cards to pay off the balance at the end of your trip. (You can combine the balances of multiple gift cards onto one card at DisneyGiftCard.com). Worst case scenario—you pay the balance at checkout and still owe some cash (but the amount owed would be less than if you didn’t prep with the gift cards). Best case scenario? You’ll have a balance left over on the gift card to use for your next trip!
Make them your own
You can personalize your MagicBands by painting them or purchasing wraps for them (that you can find from various artists on sites like Etsy) or you can purchase a MagicBand from Disney to wear something more unique than the ones that come with your reservation. There are a couple of stores at Disney like the Space Mountain Gift Shop and D-Tech at Disney Springs where you can custom design your own MagicBand with various colors, Disney characters, and more. If you’re going to be wearing the Band during your whole trip, why not make it more your own?
